A Tween Room Makeover

February 3, 2020

My twin girls' 12th birthday was fast approaching and I knew their room needed an update.

I decided to do a total room revamp while they were at their dad's for the weekend.

I had "helped" them clean their room the week prior so I wouldn't have so much cleaning to do while they were gone. I convinced them to toss a few things too. 😉

First things first

These are a few before pictures. And by before I mean even before I helped them clean... 😩(I snuck these pictures while they were at school)

As you can see I had a daunting task ahead of me. I wasn't even sure when the last time they cleaned their room was...

But I was determined to get this done.

It's go time

It was Friday morning, I dropped my kids off at school and my youngest son and I headed to the paint store.

My first project of the day was to paint one wall an ombre, after I emptied the room of course.

I watched numerous Youtube videos on how to do this and this is the result I ended up with. (It really clashed with the green floor though😖)

I am quite happy with the end result. I used a quart of aqua and one quart of the pink.

I had spent the weeks prior to this thrifting around town for various decor items. I also bought items from Etsy, the At Home store, Amazon and also Hobby Lobby. All of which had to hide in my room!

As soon as the paint was dry it was time for carpet!

My dad works at a hardware store and was able to get us a great carpet remnant. We rent our house so we wanted something we could take with us when/if we move some day.

After the carpet was in it was time to decorate! (My favorite part)

The end result

And here it is!

I'm a bit bummed I didn't take more pictures of the different steps it took to put this all together. But here are a few links of some of the items that went into the room! (These are affiliate links)

From Etsy:

Digital Prints

From Amazon:

There are many other items that I couldn't find a link for, but here is where I bought them from.

Dollar store:

  • Buckets in Closet

  • Necklace Hooks

  • Votive Cups on Desk

Walmart:

  • Big Joe Purple Chair

  • Cubicals and Canvas Bins

  • Blue Rug in front of bed

I got the desk and the pink shelves for free off of FB market place. I painted the desk white and the shelves the pink.

I also painted one of our dining chairs pink and the mirror gold that we already had.

I tried to use a lot of things we already had to help keep the cost down. I didn't keep a close tally on this project because it was a group effort.

My dad, my sisters, and my grandma all contributed to items in the room.

If you're thinking of a room makeover and can't afford it, asking friends and family is a great option! This was my girls' birthday gift and they know that everyone helped in some way.

Did you recently do a room makeover? How did you save money? Let me know in the comments!
